How to Take University Notes

While it is good to take notes according to your own style, we offer some general tips:

  • When you take notes, take into consideration the way you study. This way, you will save having to rewrite them when you get home and you will save time.
  • Be consistent with you notes: Choose a note taking technique and do not change it.
  • Do not write down every piece of information: when you concentrate in taking down everything that your lecturer says, it is hard to carefully listen and absorb what is being said.
  • Integrate technology in your note taking routine: Thanks to this, you can create quality university notes in addition to saving time by having them in digital format.

Note Taking Techniques I

These are the 4 most effective techniques:

  • Cornell Method –  Consists in dividing your page in 3 sections: Class notes (while in class), ideas (during class or just at the end) and summary (after class).
  • Split Page Method – Consists in dividing the page vertically into two sections: The main and secondary ideas. The best thing about this method is that you make the most out of your study time by taking notes and simultaneously organising.

Note Taking Techniques II

Visual Resources – This method consists in using less words and more graphs, diagrams, drawings and mind maps in your notes. These resources will help your brain to process new information naturally and effectively.

Symbols and Abbreviations – Using this technique involves creating your own language of symbols and abbreviations to speed up the process of taking notes. An example would be “ie” instead of “example”.
