10) Employability

With an increasingly globalized economy, companies are constantly expanding overseas and dealing with clients from all around the world. Being able to put another language on your resume is a huge advantage when applying for jobs and 99.9% of the time if you’re bilingual you’ll get hired over anyone else, which in today’s competitive job market, is extremely valuable.

9) Enriched Travel

When you learn another language your travel experiences will be that much better. Instead of spending your time stuck in the tourist bubble trying to get that perfect Instagram shot, you’ll actually be able to immerse yourself in a foreign country’s culture. Even if your pronunciation is a little off, just knowing some key phrases will usually be responded with smiles from the locals and open you up to some amazing opportunities that you otherwise wouldn’t of had the chance to experience.

8) Be More Open-Minded

The world is continually becoming a smaller place thanks to globalization and it’s increasingly important to understand different culture’s values, beliefs and practices. When you learn another language you’ll gain an understanding of cultural sensitivity, which will not only help with employment, but will also mean that you will be more respectful and aware of your own behaviour, on a day to day basis.

7) Build Brain Muscle

learning languagesIt’s proven that when you learn another language it improves brain function, task capacity, memory and test scores. Another study found that learning another language changes the grey matter in our brains, the area where information is processed, in a way similar to exercising any other muscle. This also contributes to the fact that learning another language slows the brains aging process and can significantly delay Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

6) It Gets Easier

Once you learn another language, learning a third, fourth or even fifth is a piece of cake in comparison! When you go through the process of learning the first language not only do you figure out what your best learning style is, but you also get to know unfamiliar syntaxes, grammar and tenses that can be applied to other languages. For example if you learn French and then decide to learn Spanish you’ll notice a lot of similarities between the two. A good strategy is studying with Flashcards to help increase your retention of the styles of languages and make it even easier.

5) Meeting People

Knowing other languages opens a lot of doors, especially when it comes to meeting new people, and because you’re able to get through the language barrier, people will be excited and interested in hearing your story. You’ll also get the opportunity to really get to know new people in way that you would never have been able to without the language. Plus who knows, it could even lead to you finding that man or woman of your dreams!

4) Improved Decision Making

A study found that learning another language actually helps eliminate “loss aversion,” the tendency of getting too caught up in the here and now and not being able to properly look ahead to the future. When you know another language it helps give you perspective, making it easier to make clear decisions and be more confident in those decisions. Using Mind Maps while studying the language enhances this benefit by visually laying out a problem and breaking the parts down – try GoConqr’s free tools when you’re studying and see if you notice a difference.

3) Live Abroad

learning languagesAs they say, the world is your oyster, but this is especially true when you learn another language. Being bilingual gives you the confidence to spread your wings, go live abroad and be able to totally immerse yourself in a different country, city and culture – how exciting is that! This type of experience is the best way to push yourself out of your comfort zone, gain maturity and learn about the type of person you want to be. Not to mention, you’ll walk away with some lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories.

2) New Perspective

As crazy as it sounds, learning another language can literally change the way you see or hear the world around you. This is because when you know more than one language, your brain has to work harder to distinguish the different sounds between each language and it actually leads to improved listening skills. Even more crazy is the fact that learning another language can actually change the way you see things. For example, if you learn Japanese they have a unique idea about the difference between light and dark blues, which can literally make you see the colour in different ways.

1) Personal Growth

Probably the most important reason to learn another language is because of the huge increase in self confidence and personal growth you will gain. After all, isn’t learning and growing what life is all about? Knowing other languages is really the catalyst to opening your life up in so many different, exciting ways and you’ll be able to gain so many new opportunities and experiences that will change your life forever.
