Firewalls A firewall prevents unauthorised access to a computer or network from other computer attached to it or connected over the internet.
Firewalls (2) The firewall monitors all incoming and outgoing traffic to and from the computer or network.
Firewalls (3) Any incoming or outgoing data that has not been requested by the computer is blocked. It allows requests from other computers, and block attempts from threats.
Anti-malware software. It is provided by anti-virus software. It comes nowadays as a protection plan for computers together with anti-spam, anti-spyware and firewall protection.
Anti-malware (2) All files are opened by users to download remotely such as via the internet or memory stick and scanned for known virus programs. Any files containing these would be deleted, blocked or even removed permenantly.
Encryption This is used to protect data which is then transferred between two computers. This stops other unknown users from accessing, changing or intercepting the data. This includes secret codes (encryption key) or a scrambled key of data.
Passwords 1) Always use a password that is hard to guess that is personal to you. 2) A strong password will be a random collection of numbers, letters and symbols (e.g. g£hjsj12*) 3) A different password for every account or computer is ideal. 4) Never write your password down on paper that someone could see, and change it every so often.
ISP (Internet Service Provider) Provides you with a modem which allows you to access the internet and provide a help service for people who need advice on setting up etc. (e.g. BT, TALK-TALK)
