First Year at University: 7 Top Tips to Start on the Right Foot

7 Tips for Your First Year at University

First Year at university

It’s your first year at university! No doubt you’ve heard thousands of urban legends about university, from the campus and exams to student life, parties, the different clubs and societies, and you’re eager to experience it all for yourself. You’ll probably be filled with uncertainty and many other tentative feelings but don’t worry! We’ve prepared 7 tips to help you through those first few weeks of university:

1. Take a Tour of the University Campus

Yes, we know that you know your school like the back of your hand but you’re in university/college now and, most likely, this is a much bigger place than your school. So it’s worth taking time to familiarise yourself with the university campus and the various different areas. And of course, do not forget to investigate where your classrooms are!

2. Don’t Miss the First Day!

The first days of class at university are devoted to introductions and presentations, which can be a bit boring and monotonous. However, don’t make the mistake of thinking they are pointless. It’s in these first few classes where you will meet the most new people and who have similar interests to you. If you miss these days you will feel more isolated later on.

Also, from the academic point of view, these classes are used to outline the structure of the subject and the types of tests and projects you’ll need to complete during the university semester. This is fundamental information on how to achieve success in your university class.

3. Organise Your Time

You’re going to have to get up early for your classes so it’s a good idea to create a study timetable. Here you can organise your routine by incorporating your classes, the times you’re going to study and time for other activities. Organisation is key to achieving your study goals and exam success at university. Properly organising and planning your study can save you a lot of time and trouble when your exams are approaching.

4. Get Involved in Campus Activities

University is a lot more than just classes and exams. University is a concept that offers you a host of possibilities to develop both academically and personally. Find out about the different projects, clubs and societies that are in your university. You will definitely find something you’re interested in. Also, getting involved in campus activities is always a good opportunity to meet new people at your university.

5. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone

Some experiences in university may be daunting but you shouldn’t be afraid to go outside your comfort zone and try something new. Asking questions in class is important because you can be sure others are thinking the same thing and students who ask questions are viewed more positively by teachers.

However, do not become the person raising your hand every 5 minutes trying to look smarter. Also, ask your university classmates questions or organise study groups so that together you may solve your problems instead of bombarding you lecturers with questions.

6. Accept Diversity at University

When you start university you will find people of all ages, races, nationalities and ideologies. Don’t prejudge anyone and try to learn as much as possible from others. This will enrich you culturally and certainly will make you grow as a person. It’s also the best way to make new friends!

7. Learn to Speak your Teachers Language

This advice is a bit more long term, but it is useful to know from the start. As you will see when you start university, each teacher/lecturer has their own way of explaining, organising concepts, math problems and communicating with students. The trick is to try and speak in the same language as your teacher would. Yes, we know this is not ideal but teachers should reward your creativity and critical opinions .
